Raising the Prostitution Age

Dutchnews.nl had an interesting little article today: “Justice minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin is to consider whether the legal age for prostitutes can be raised from 18 to 21 years as part of a package of measures to combat forced prostitution, reports ANP news agency on Wednesday. In November MPs rejected a proposal by the right-wing PVV party to raise the age for prostitutes.”

This makes me really wish I could read Dutch, cause then I could look at Telegraaf or Volkskrant and get some kind of opinion on this. I wonder if age is the real issue behind the trafficking. Is an 18 year old that much more malleable than a 21 year old? It’s only three years. I wonder if the proposal is misguided and overlooking a major issue here. No, they shouldn’t be Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver young, but it’s so easy to fake an age that all the government might end up with is a false sense of security.

Shouldn’t they go after the pimps rather than making it harder for prostitutes to work?

Agreed–changing the legal age won’t deter prostitutes, but why should it be easy for prostitutes to work as prostitutes?

The idealist in me would like both prostitutes and pimps to choose another way to make a living or get their thrills, but reality teaches me that in the wild exists both hunters and prey. The story of the two may play out with different characters but it will play out nonetheless.

I hope that the ills that lead one to prostitution or pimping can be solved; but it will take a lot of work and likely a long time.

Well, the easier in, the easier out.

The Dutch government might lapse into larger, bureaucratic measures to slow down prostitutes from working, but that just encourages them to bypass legality and work on the streets. I’m a huge fan of legalized prostitution. If anything has to go, it’s the pimping.

    Okay, I see your point!

I can agree to the decriminalization of prostitution under the belief that we own our bodies, so we should be able to do as we wish with them.

Interestingly enough, in Canada there is a resident who was involved in a kidney harvesting and selling scheme between here and India, which started the debate: do we own our bodies or does the government? So you see where this could lead? ;-)

But since you said that the pimping should go, is that in spite of the fact that some prostitutes feel they need their pimps to protect them?

There are so many ways to look at this issue and I’m glad you’re not afraid to discuss it.
